SYNOPSIS

Seit über fünf Jahrzehnten prägt Germaine Acogny die internationale
Tanzwelt. In Benin geboren, im Senegal aufgewachsen und in Paris
ausgebildet, entwickelte sie mit der „Acogny-Technique“ die
einflussreichste afrikanische Tanzmethode. Inspiriert von den
kraftvollen Rhythmen der westafrikanischen Musik hat sie als
Choreographin Tanzgeschichte geschrieben. Gemeinsam mit ihrem Ehemann
Helmut Vogt gründete Germaine Acogny Mitte der 1990er-Jahre in Senegal
die École des Sables, die sich zu einem der bedeutendsten Zentren für
zeitgenössischen Tanz entfaltet hat. Durch die Zusammenarbeit mit
Institutionen wie der Pina Bausch Foundation, dem Sadler’s Wells Theatre
London oder der Amsterdamer Universität der Künste, erkunden junge
Tänzer:innen aus Afrika, Europa und Amerika neue Formen der Tanzkunst.

Der Film begleitet Germaine Acogny auf die Bühnen, die sie mit über 80
Jahren noch immer leidenschaftlich und energievoll bespielt. Er zeigt
sie auf Reisen in ihr Heimatland Benin, nach Venedig, wo sie mit dem
Goldenen Löwen für ihr Lebenswerk geehrt wird und nach Paris, wo ihr der
Grand Prix de l’Académie des Beaux Art verliehen wird. Ihre bewegte
Gegenwart und lebendige Vergangenheit werden durch dokumentarische
Szenen, sorgfältig ausgewähltes Archivmaterial sowie eigens für den Film
inszenierte Tanzszenen vereint. „Germaine Acogny – Die Essenz des
Tanzes“ portraitiert eine der bedeutendsten Künstleri nnen des
afrikanischen Kontinents.

Film Synopsis:
An undelivered letter written by a Japanese activist that was lost on its way, has been found by a Palestinian filmmaker after 30 years. R21 aka Restoring Solidarity is a film about making a film. It's also a film about films that exist on the margins of documentary, fiction, and an archive. The set-up was to make a narrative out of a collection of 20 films, with the intention to send out a message of solidarity. It's an act of reaching out, of asking questions, an act of looking, together - the team behind the film and the audience - a gaze that gets entangled with speculations, politics, and the hopes of an era.
While lost in translation, the filmmaker is haunted by a voice that is comprehending the need to save these films and images, not by and for the Palestinian people only, but for the Japanese people as well. Placing such an archive of Palestinian films as part of the Japanese people's archive, at the same time, restores an account of solidarity that emerges throughout the narrative.


MOVIE NIGHTS is a screening series for a transdisciplinary exchange, that was initiated to oppose the persistent silence about the ongoing genocide in Palestine. Starting each time from one film we open the space for conversations about the relations between production of images and their conditions, involving modes of narration, authorship, history, politics and effects on society. We watch fiction, documentaries, movies and television productions focusing on filmmakers with antizionist and liberatory practices.

The movie nights are hosted and organized by the sections Applied Photography, Art and Communication Practices, Klasse für Alle, Philosophy, and Transcultural Studies at the University of Applied Arts Vienna.

20 JAHRE WETTBEWERB STROMKILOMETER 2006-2026

Stromkilometer ist ein Preis und zugleich ein Auftrag, der an Studierende, Alumni und Mitarbeiter:innen der Universität für Angewandte Kunst vergeben wird.
Das Schulschiff Bertha von Suttner hat bisher Maturantinnen und Maturanten mit einem Multiple (Matura-Abschluss-Geschenk) junger Künstlerinnen und Künstler beschenkt. Student:innen, Alumni und auch Mitarbeiter:innen der Angewandten werden aufgefordert ein solches Geschenk für die Maturantinnen und Maturanten 2025/2026 des Schulschiffs zu entwerfen.

Für die beste Einreichung stehen insgesamt 700€ als Preisgeld sowie 700€ zur Umsetzung zur Verfügung.

Einsendeschluss: 10.05.2026

Der Stromkilometer Wettbewerb wird am Mittwoch, den 13.05.2026 von 14:00 bis ca.16:00 Uhr auf der Universität der Angewandten Kunst (VZA 7) stattfinden.

20 YEARS COMPETITION STROMKILOMETER 2006-2026

Stromkilometer is both a prize and a challenge that is awarded to students, alumni and also employees of the University of Applied Arts Vienna. The school ship Bertha von Suttner has so far rewarded high school graduates with a multiple (present for the graduates) of artists. Students, alumni and employees of the Angewandte are invited to design this special gift for the 2025/2026 graduates of the Schulschiff. It should show a sign of remembrance of the school ship and the graduation.

700€ is available as prize money for the best submission and additional 700€ for implementation.

Submission Deadline: 10.05.2026

The jury meeting will take place on Wednesday, 13.05.2026 from 14:00 to 16:00 at the University of Applied Arts Vienna (VZA 7) .

The Commune Form. Event with Kristin Ross 15.-16.4.2026
Workshop and Public Lecture

The Philosophy Department at the University of Applied Arts, in cooperation with the Department of Art Theory at the University of Vienna, is pleased to present a 2 part event with Kristin Ross, Professor Emeritus of Comparative Literature at New York University (NYU).

Professor Ross will be hosting a workshop on her newest book The Commune Form: The Transformation of Everyday Life (Verso, 2025). The workshop will take place 15 April, 2–5 pm at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, SR 21, Vordere Zollamtsstraße 7, 1030 Vienna

There will be a public lecture, also on her new book, on 16 April at 6 pm at University of Applied Arts Vienna, Auditorium, Vordere Zollamtsstraße 7, 1030 Vienna. No registration is required for the lecture.
